“Go Green” with Roofing in Manchester, NH

Are you concerned with the impact your lifestyle has on the environment? When it comes to products for the home, would you like to make choices that both are eco-friendly and long-lasting? The purchase of “green” roofing products offers a practical way to reach your goal! Here are some choices to consider for roofing in Manchester, NH:

• Traditional green roofing (also referred to as a “sky garden” or “ecoroof”) features a roof deck entirely covered with vegetation and soil – the ultimate in environmental sustainability. While green roofs are often suitable for commercial urban architecture, they can be impractical for residential homeowners.

• Recycled-content shingles are made from recycled waste materials, such as plastic, rubber or wood fiber. This keeps waste out of landfills and reduces the use of natural resources, which in turn lowers energy consumption and reduces pollution.

• 50-year asphalt shingles, such as the GAF Timberline® series, can last 2-3 times longer than a standard shingle, making them an eco-friendly choice. GAF Advanced Protection® shingles are specially engineered to be lighter and stronger than the average shingle, yet use less asphalt and limestone and require less fuel to transport.

• Many metal roofing products include recycled material, and metal roofing can be recycled at the end of its life. Which brings us to another advantage: metal roofs can last up to 50 years, resulting in less waste in the long run.

There are many eco-friendly roofing products to choose from, so compare your options carefully. Be sure to check with your insurance agent to see whether the product you’re considering will qualify you for a discount on your homeowner’s insurance! Why You Should Remove Snow & Ice from Roofing in Manchester, NH

During winter, snow and ice build-up on your roof can create serious problems for your home. Several weeks ago, we discussed ice dams on this blog – how they form and the damage that can result. In a nutshell, an ice dam that forms along your home’s gutter system can allow water to seep under your roof, into your attic and down into the structure of your home. When snow is not cleared off a roof with an ice dam, the situation will only worsen. Removing significant snow buildup on a roof will temporarily stop the formation of ice dams, and could save you costly repairs.

In addition to ice damming, there are other dangers associated with a heavy snow load on your roof:
• Roof leaks
• Gutter clogs and back-up
• Skylight leaks
• Skylight cracking
• Roof collapse from the sheer weight of wet, heavy snow

In these situations, trying yourself to free your roof and guttering from layers of ice and snow can be extremely dangerous. Whenever possible, we recommend you contact a professional that knows how to deal with the slippery, icy and windy conditions on roofing in Manchester, NH. The experts at AJC Roofing use proven techniques to get rid of snow and ice without damage to your roofing materials. Don’t wait – call us anytime at (877) 578-0494 for prompt snow and ice removal, before the damage is done!

Leaky New Hampshire Skylight? What to Look For

Skylights installed by AJC Roofing offer many practical benefits. By bringing natural light into your home, you can enjoy added warmth, a reduced need for artificial heat and lighting, and cut your monthly utility cost. VELUX skylights are available with energy-efficient glass packages that help insulate your home against winter chill and summer heat. But most of all, a New Hampshire skylight brings light and cheer into your home, while protecting your privacy.

Getting the most out of your skylight requires proper installation and maintenance. But even when you follow the recommended guidelines for care of your roof, skylight leaks may develop as a result of normal wear and tear. Fortunately, many skylight leak repairs can be done quickly and inexpensively. Knowing what to look for can make necessary repairs easier and more cost-effective.

• The most obvious repair would be cracked glass in the skylight due to hail or flying debris. Most skylights can be replaced, so consult a professional.

• If you notice a water stain on the ceiling at or near the top of your skylight, the source of the leak may be the flashing around the skylight. A roofing professional can inspect to make sure your roof’s flashing and seal are tight.

• If you notice a stain at the bottom of your skylight, the problem may be caused by excess condensation. Condensation results naturally from humidity, and often builds up during rain storms. When too much condensation gets trapped in part of a skylight, it may create leaks.

Some skylight leaks are easily fixed by the do-it-yourself homeowner, while others require the expertise of a professional skylight installer. At AJC Roofing, we can help with any skylight need. Call us today at (877) 578-0494.

Why It’s OK to Install Roofing in New Hampshire During Winter

While most folks limit their outdoor activities during the coldest part of winter to skiing and trudging back and forth to the mailbox, you’ll still find AJC’s skilled crews hard at work installing new roofs and making roof repairs in the Nashua area. Many homeowners are surprised that the majority of our work can be continued throughout the winter months. In fact, winter is often the best time to have a roof installed: you’ll get the best roof prices because work is slow and contractors are willing to compete for your business.

Any company that installs roofing in New Hampshire will tell you that winter installations can be more challenging due to colder temperatures and wet conditions. However, a good contractor gives the extra care and attention needed to build a high quality roof in the cold weather. Here are some facts about installing an asphalt shingle roof in the winter:

An experienced roofer can deal with snow and winter rain as effectively as he can deal with summer showers and thunderstorms. He’ll protect your home from water and wind, no matter the season.

Asphalt shingles do become brittle in cold temperatures. Breakage can be minimized when the shingles are stored in a warm area and loaded onto the roof a few bundles at a time.

Generally, asphalt shingles can be installed at temperatures of 26°F and above. In colder temperatures, extra precautions must be taken to ensure shingles don’t crack.

Solar heat causes adhesive on the backside of shingles to cure, creating a bond between the shingles. In very cold environments, manufacturers and the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) recommend that additional beads of shingle adhesive be applied, since shingles may not get warm enough to create an adhesive bond before being subjected to high winds.

If you have additional questions or concerns about getting a new roof in the winter, AJC Roofing encourages you to contact us today. We are happy to answer all of your roofing questions. We also offer a free roof estimate to our neighbors in southern New Hampshire and northeastern Massachusetts. Just call (877) 578-0494!

Roof Emergency? Our NH Roofers Can Help

If you experience a roof emergency – anything from a small water leak to catastrophic damage as a result of wind, rain, snow, or falling branches or utility poles – you usually can’t wait for a sunny day to make repairs. But don’t try to handle it alone. Instead, call the experienced NH roofers at AJC Roofing.

You may be tempted to delay repairs to a damaged roof, chimney or gutter. Don’t! When left exposed to the weather, roof components will deteriorate rapidly, placing in danger the rafters, sheathing, insulation and – eventually – your ceiling and walls. Water seeping into your walls can also reach electrical systems and cause fires. Our emergency roofing crew can make immediate, short-term repairs that will prevent further damage and protect your property. Next, we’ll evaluate whether more permanent repairs are necessary. We’ll also document the damage for insurance claims.

When disaster strikes or when you don’t want small problems to become big headaches, call the experts at AJC Roofing. We have experience with a wide range of emergency roof repair situations, including:
• Storm damage
• Fire damage
• Roof leaks
• Roof replacement
• Roof inspections

If you’re worried about your roof, call our NH roofers right away at (877) 578-0494 or click here to schedule a FREE roofing inspection. AJC Roofing has the expertise you need to take away the stress!

When to Call For a NH Roofing Inspection

A good roofing contractor will advise you to conduct a complete NH roofing inspection twice per year: once in the fall to ensure there are no issues that will leave your home susceptible to harsh winter weather, then again in the spring to determine if damage was done during the winter that could be worsened by heavy spring rains. In addition, there are other times when it’s wise to schedule an inspection with a professional roofing inspector.

• Get a roofing inspection before you sell your home. No one wants the sale of their home to be jeopardized by the last-minute discovery of a roofing issue. A roof inspection will allow you to find out in advance if there are problems, then fix them or disclose them upfront. The inspection can cost between $150 and $500, depending on the type and size of the roof, but it could also save your sale.

• Get a roofing inspection before you buy a home. Roof inspections give buyers peace of mind. Because home inspectors generally do not perform a thorough roof inspection, a separate inspection is the best way to get a detailed analysis of the roof’s condition before the deal is closed.

• Get a roofing inspection if you have a roof leak, but can’t locate the source. Some roofing issues are easy to diagnose, but others required a trained eye and some old-fashioned detective work. If you know you have a leak but can’t determine the original source, call a professional before more damage is done.

• Get a roof inspection if your roof is 20+ years old. NH roofing materials age at different rates, so it is wise to have your roof inspected as it nears the 20-year mark. The inspector can tell you whether it’s time to replace, or how much more life to expect before replacement becomes necessary.

To schedule a FREE 10-point roof inspection – the only way to fully evaluate the condition of your home’s roof – call AJC Roofing today at (877) 578-0494.

How to Prep Roofing in Nashua, NH, for Winter

Don’t let the recent warmer-than-usual temperatures in the Northeast fool you: winter is in full swing, and frigid cold and heavy snowfall can arrive at any time. Take advantage of this mild weather and take a peek at your roof, if you haven’t done so within the past few months. Are your roof and gutters ready for snow, ice and heavy snowmelt? If the answer is no, don’t delay a winter prep any longer! Here are some helpful tips recommended by our manufacturer partner GAF, based in Wayne, NJ:

1. Check the roof framing structure to verify that it has not weakened. Focus on looking for uneven areas which may indicate damage to the roof deck beneath the shingles.
2. Examine your gutter system and make sure it’s not clogged with leaves, debris, or branches. Clean gutters are important in the winter so rainwater and snow have a way off the roof.
3. Ensure gutters are properly attached to the side of the roof. Make sure they are fastened tightly so that no water overflows or falls off of the fascia board.
4. Inspect roof valleys and make sure no debris has built up. This can add additional weight to your roof and can act as a barrier to the rain and snow.
5. Check to see if your metal flashings are installed correctly. Flashing should be used around pipes, skylights, roof vents and chimneys. Note if it has been damaged, loosened or torn by storms and high winds.
6. Walk around the roof and inspect your shingles for damage. Be sure to focus on curling edges, missing granules, missing shingles, or problems caused by birds or rodents.

As always, if you notice any roofing or guttering problems, or if you are uncomfortable doing your own inspection, call AJC Roofing at (877) 578-0494 for affordable, experienced and reliable service.
